HEAL-AI
Healthcare Ethical Assessment Lab for Artificial Intelligence
We are a team of bioethicists, physicians, health services researchers, lawyers, and computer scientists working to identify and address ethical issues arising from use of healthcare AI tools before they become problems for the organization, clinicians, and patients. We conduct ethical assessments of individual AI use cases being proposed for implementation at Stanford Health Care facilities by gathering and synthesizing the perspectives of diverse stakeholders and AI ethics experts.
With grant funding from the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) and Stanford Impact Labs, we are also refining our ethical assessment process so that other healthcare organizations can adopt it. Our process is designed to be rapid, scalable, and exportable – even to organizations without deep expertise in AI. We are developing open-source materials and training so that other organizations with a commitment to responsible AI governance don’t have to start from scratch.
